TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences) TWAS is an independent international organization founded in 1983 by a group of scientists from the countries of the South, led by the late Nobel laureate Professor Abdus Salam of Pakistan, in Trieste, Italy. Its secretariat is currently located at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste. Objectives: - To recognize, support and promote scientific research in the South - To provide the necessary research facilities for the advancement of research work by committed scientists in the South - To facilitate communication between scientists and institutions in the South - To encourage South-North cooperation between individuals and research centers - To encourage scientific research on important issues of the Third World Awards: TWAS Prizes in Basic Sciences: Every year, 5 prizes, each worth $10,000, are awarded to scientists in the fields of biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and basic medical sciences. TWAS Research Grants Financial support up to $10,000 for research projects in developing countries in four basic science fields: biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics.
