Project of Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) The Islamic Republic of Iran became a member of the SESAME project (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) in 2007, with the approval of the Islamic Consultative Assembly. The SESAME project is a joint initiative between Iran and regional countries, aimed at constructing a synchrotron machine (a massive machine producing X-rays with adjustable frequency) for scientific applications, located in Jordan. This project is considered part of advanced engineering sciences in particle physics and is beneficial in scientific fields such as medicine, environment, agriculture, etc. The permanent members of the SESAME project are the Islamic Republic of Iran, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Pakistan, Turkey, Palestine, Israel, and Egypt. Center Activities in SESAME * Participation in the development of the work program and estimation of the annual budget of the SESAME committee * Holding periodic meetings of the members of the Iranian SESAME committee * Establishing the secretariat, executive office, and technical office of the SESAME committee * Participation of Iranian representatives and advisors in the SESAME High Council * Participation of Iranian users in the annual users' conference * Holding a conference on the applications of synchrotron radiation * Cooperation with the Iranian Light Source Facility (National Accelerator) The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) was established by a group of prominent scientists from the Global South, led by Professor Abdus Salam, a Pakistani Nobel laureate, with the aim of enhancing the scientific capacity of these countries. This independent international organization began its work in 1983 in Trieste, Italy, under the initial title of "Third World Academy of Sciences." The members of this academy, currently numbering over nine hundred, are selected from among the world's leading scientists and represent seventy countries. The TWAS Secretariat is located at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, and a council, elected by the members every three years, oversees its programs. TWAS Iran With the membership of a significant number of prominent Iranian researchers in The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the Iranian branch of this academy, titled TWAS Iran (TWASIC), was established by eleven Iranian researchers in 2003 at the Center for International Scientific Studies and Cooperation. TWAS Iran members hold meetings to review the qualifications of candidates for the TWAS Award and to introduce qualified Iranian researchers for membership in the international TWAS. The results of the research conducted by TWAS Iran members, with the financial support of the center, include over 100 articles published in reputable scientific journals. The aim of this center is to develop and create motivation in research and study of advanced fields, especially in developing countries. Although the original name of the center is still preserved, its activities cover most aspects of physics and its applications. For more than three decades, this center has been operating as a gathering place for scientists from all over the world. Annually, nearly 4,000 scientists visit the center to benefit from its scientific environment and high-level research facilities simultaneously. On December 10, 1998, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (formerly the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education) and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics during the visit of the Minister of Science to participate in the tenth general meeting of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the twelfth meeting of the Executive Council of the Third World Scientific Organizations Network (TWNSO) in Trieste, Italy. The Center for Studies, as the main hub of Iran's cooperation with the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, is responsible for implementing the signed memoranda of understanding.
